Description

Ingenious movement and finely resolved proportions define this Brazilian modern bar cart by Ming Móveis. Produced in the late 1950s, the design transforms a compact serving piece into an expanded entertaining surface through an articulated mechanism that is as visually compelling as it is practical.

The upper tray pivots on brass linkages to create three configurations: a closed, two-level cart; an elevated, stepped arrangement; and a fully extended, continuous tabletop. Exposed pivot points make the movement legible, introducing a subtle industrial accent against the warmth of the imbuia. A fixed lower shelf provides additional storage, while four casters allow the cart to move easily between settings.

Its elegance lies in the details. Rounded upper corners soften the tall end frames, gently tapered legs lend lightness, and slim raised edges neatly define the serving surfaces. Broad areas of figured imbuia reveal flowing grain in amber, tobacco, and chestnut tones. Beautifully restored, the wood retains a rich, luminous finish that complements the mellow patina of the brass.

The design’s documentation in Casa e Jardim, edition 43, June 1958, page 27, places it within the contemporary Brazilian home of the period. The manufacturer’s seal remains beneath the lower shelf, providing a further link to its production history.

Adaptable and quietly sophisticated, this cart brings the resourcefulness of Brazilian modern design into the rituals of serving and entertaining.
