Description

An elegant balance of sculptural form and reclining comfort, this Brazilian modern lounge chair by Ernesto Hauner pairs richly grained rosewood armrests with a slender black metal structure and exceptionally soft burnt-orange mohair. Designed in the 1960s, its elongated silhouette and carefully considered proportions give the chair a distinctive presence, while the open frame keeps the composition visually light.

The tall, gently contoured backrest flows into a generously cushioned seat, with an integrated footrest extending the chair into a relaxed reclining position. Rounded upholstery edges soften the angular geometry of the base, whose continuous metal lines create a striking profile beneath the upholstered volume. Two discreet backrest buttons introduce a restrained detail. Above the frame, smoothly shaped Brazilian rosewood armrests provide a warm, tactile surface, their deep brown tones and darker grain contrasting beautifully with the black satin-matte metal.

Newly upholstered in plush mohair, the chair has a rich yet understated warmth. The burnt-orange fabric carries subtle copper undertones, with a dense, velvety pile that feels exceptionally soft to the touch. As light travels across the upholstery, its surface shifts between softly illuminated orange and deeper shaded tones—a natural quality of the pile that lends depth without overwhelming the design. Full cushioning and two reclining positions make the chair inviting for reading and extended relaxation.

Ernesto Hauner contributed to the development of Brazilian modern furniture through his involvement with Móveis Artesanal and Forma, and later through the founding of Mobilinea. His significance extends beyond individual objects to the growth of a modern furniture industry attentive to changing domestic life. Mobilinea became an important presence in Brazilian design during the 1960s and 1970s, helping bring coordinated modern furnishings into everyday interiors. This recliner reflects that broader concern with practical comfort, material contrast, and clarity of form.

Beautifully restored, the chair features refinished rosewood armrests, renewed mohair upholstery, and a reinforced reclining mechanism. Its combination of enveloping comfort and an open, finely drawn structure makes it equally compelling as a reading chair or a sculptural accent in a living room, bedroom, or study.
