Percival Lafer

Percival Lafer (1936-) is a Brazilian-born contemporary furniture designer and architect who pioneered the Brazilian Modernist movement. After studying architecture in São Paulo, he inherited his family's furniture shop following the sudden passing of his father. He quickly gained recognition for his exceptional craftsmanship and innovative designs that defined the Modernist era.  

Lafer's patented, solution-based designs aimed to reach a broader audience, using contemporary methods of production and expert craftsmanship to create affordable, high-quality pieces for the middle class. His work connected the principles of inclusivity with the aesthetic value of mid-century Modernism. His furniture features traditional curved wooden structures and notably comfortable upholstery- detachable for convenient reassembly and reflective of Brazilian terrain and culture. Lafer's originality and honest intentions cemented his reputable role as a designer in the Brazilian Modernist era.
