Description
Slender proportions and beautifully sculpted transitions distinguish this pair of Brazilian modern chairs by Carlo Hauner. Dating to the 1950s, their design balances a clear architectural framework with softened edges, expressive timber, and the transparency of woven cane.
The craftsmanship is particularly apparent in profile. Shaped seat rails extend slightly beyond the front legs, terminating in gently rounded tips, while concave curves articulate the junctions between seat, legs, and back uprights. These small gestures give the frame an unexpected fluidity. Tapered, subtly splayed legs establish a poised stance, reinforced by slim horizontal stretchers. Above, the backrest’s gently bowed crest rail frames a finely woven cane panel, with an open space beneath that lends lightness to the composition.
Executed in solid caviúna, the frames reveal lively grain in shades of honey, amber, and chestnut, traced with darker figuring. Professional refinishing brings depth to the wood through a warm satin-matte surface. Newly fitted caning introduces a delicate geometric texture, complemented by the smooth grain and soft ivory tone of the renewed cream leather seats. Their gently crowned upholstery adds comfort without obscuring the sculpted wooden rails.
Beautifully restored, with subtle age-related marks remaining, the pair offers an intimate expression of Brazilian modern design: tactile, carefully proportioned, and equally considered from the front, side, or back.
