Description

Designed during the height of Brazil’s postwar modernist optimism, this rare set of twelve chairs was created for the headquarters of Bloch Editors, one of the most influential Brazilian publishing and broadcasting conglomerates of the 20th century. Commissioned as part of Bloch’s ambitious modern interiors program in São Paulo, the chairs reflect a collaborative moment between Sergio Rodrigues and Joaquim Tenreiro, two central figures in the formation of Brazilian Modernism.

Executed in solid Brazilian Rosewood (jacarandá), the chairs feature an architectural structure paired with restrained black leather upholstery, resulting in an aesthetic that borders on institutional Brutalism while retaining the warmth and refinement characteristic of Brazilian design. The slightly inclined, gently curved backrests were conceived to provide ergonomic support during extended meetings, underscoring the designers’ commitment to comfort without sacrificing formal clarity.

Originally upholstered in black faux leatherette, the seats have been respectfully reupholstered in high-quality genuine black leather, preserving the original visual intent while enhancing longevity and tactile depth. The rosewood frames have been carefully refinished, revealing exceptionally vibrant grain patterns and tonal variation emblematic of mid-century Brazilian hardwoods. Minor, age-appropriate marks—primarily to the legs—remain visible and are consistent with institutional use.

Several chairs retain their original Bloch patrimony plaques affixed to the backrests, a rare surviving detail that firmly anchors the set within its original corporate and cultural context. As a complete group of twelve with documented provenance, this ensemble represents an increasingly scarce example of large-scale, architecturally commissioned Brazilian modern furniture.

A museum-grade set of exceptional historical relevance, ideal for collectors, institutions, or interiors seeking authenticity, scale, and intellectual weight within Brazilian Modern design history.
