Description

A refined pair of side tables by M.L. Magalhães, executed in solid Brazilian rosewood with inset marble tops, circa 1960. Architecturally restrained yet materially rich, the design reflects the disciplined elegance of mid-century Brazilian modernism.

Each table is constructed from richly grained rosewood, finished in a satin matte that highlights the depth and movement of the timber without gloss or excess. The legs are grounded, supporting a precisely proportioned frame that cradles a square marble top. The stone introduces a subtle contrast — cool, mineral, and softly veined — against the warmth and density of the wood. Beneath, a secondary shelf provides both structural balance and functional utility, reinforcing the clarity of the form.

The composition is deliberate: clean vertical lines, squared geometry, and the tactile interplay between polished stone and hand-finished hardwood. The marble retains natural variation consistent with the material, while the rosewood presents a deep tonal range typical of Brazilian production of the period.

Elegant in scale yet substantial in presence, the pair works beautifully flanking a sofa or anchoring lounge seating. Their proportion and material integrity make them equally compelling as standalone sculptural objects.

A collector-grade example of Brazilian modernist craftsmanship, balancing utility with quiet sophistication.
