Description

Unattributed, Brazil, c. 1950s. This compact side table exemplifies mid-century Brazilian restraint — an economical, sculptural object in which a rotating top and two-tier plan are resolved into a clear, purposeful geometry. The piece reads as a study in proportion and purposeful detail: a slightly chamfered rectangular top pivots atop a tapered support, creating a modestly animated surface that can be reoriented for service or display.

Formally spare, the design balances a taut horizontal plane with a vertical armature. The swivel top is set above a secondary shelf, the two planes separated by a crisply pared support that narrows toward the base; the result is a lively, compact silhouette in which the relationship of top, shelf and leg is deliberately composed. The table’s proportions emphasize usefulness without ornament, the rotating top introducing a discreet functional gesture that remains integral to the design vocabulary.

Crafted in pau marfim (ivorywood), the table’s surfaces present a warm, light-brown field whose grain and sightlines are carefully preserved. The legs and trim receive an ebony finish, the deep, satin field providing a sober counterpoint to the wood’s tone and allowing edgework and joinery to remain the primary expressive devices. Execution favors honest joinery, refined edge treatment, and neat mechanical detailing.

Function is explicit: the swivel top enhances versatility for small-plan interiors, while the lower shelf offers practical storage or display. Condition: in excellent vintage condition. The wood has been professionally refinished; cushions of restoration have been conservative and transparent. A manufacturing seal is present beneath the first tier, supporting provenance. Age-appropriate marks are confined to undersides and discrete edges.
