Description
Designed by Jorge Jabour for Cantù Móveis e Interiores Ltda. during the 1960s, these refined Brazilian Modern armchairs embody the understated sophistication that defined the country's most accomplished furniture production of the period. Architectural in spirit yet remarkably inviting, the design balances sculptural simplicity with exceptional comfort, resulting in a chair that feels as relevant in contemporary interiors as it did over half a century ago.
Executed entirely in solid Brazilian rosewood (Jacarandá), each chair showcases the extraordinary material quality that has become synonymous with the finest examples of Brazilian Modernism. Rich chocolate and reddish-brown tones are animated by dramatic, flowing grain patterns that vary naturally from chair to chair, making every example unique. The wood has been professionally restored and finished in a soft satin-matte sheen that enhances the remarkable depth of the rosewood without appearing overly polished, allowing the intricate figuring and natural character of the timber to remain the visual focus.
The design is distinguished by its continuous architectural silhouette. A gently curved backrest flows seamlessly into slender, integrated armrests, creating a composition that is both visually light and structurally confident. Carefully tapered legs, subtle joinery, and balanced proportions demonstrate the level of craftsmanship associated with Cantù's finest production, while the sculptural framework offers an elegant expression from every viewing angle.
Beyond its striking appearance, the chair was conceived with versatility in mind. Its ergonomic proportions and integrated arms make it equally successful as a dining chair, accent chair, or desk chair, adapting effortlessly to dining rooms, home offices, libraries, bedrooms, or living spaces. Whether placed individually or as a complete set around a dining table, the design maintains the same sense of refinement and functionality that has made Brazilian Modern furniture increasingly sought after by collectors, designers, and architects worldwide.
Each chair has been newly upholstered in a richly textured bouclé fabric, selected to complement the warmth of the Brazilian rosewood while providing exceptional comfort. The soft, tactile upholstery contrasts beautifully with the sculptural wooden frame, reinforcing the material dialogue that characterizes the best Brazilian furniture of the era.
Although Jorge Jabour remains less widely known internationally than some of his celebrated contemporaries, his work has gained increasing recognition for its architectural clarity, restrained elegance, and exceptional use of Brazil's finest native hardwoods. As scholarship and collector interest continue to expand beyond the canonical names of Brazilian Modernism, Jabour's designs have become increasingly appreciated for their timeless aesthetic, craftsmanship, and enduring functionality.
