Description
Carved from a single block of richly figured hardwood, this sculptural serving platter evokes the organic contour of a tropical leaf. The elongated form unfolds into three gently recessed compartments, each shaped with fluid transitions and softened edges, while an integrated handle extends the composition with quiet balance and utility.
The wood displays deep, variegated tones—ranging from warm amber to dark chocolate—animated by expressive, swirling grain patterns that move continuously across the surface. The carving follows these natural lines, allowing the material itself to define the visual rhythm of the piece. Subtle undulations along the rim and the central ridge reinforce its biomorphic character, a hallmark of Brazilian modern design in the mid-20th century.
Both functional and decorative, the platter reflects the period’s commitment to material integrity and artisanal craftsmanship. Originally produced for both domestic use and international export, such objects exemplify the refined yet approachable sensibility of 1960s Brazilian decorative arts.
