Description

A monumental Brazilian modern dining table attributed to Giuseppe Scapinelli, crafted in caviúna with brass accents, Brazil, circa 1950s. Accommodating eight guests, this striking design balances an expansive surface with an unusually delicate silhouette, allowing the expressive wood grain and carefully resolved proportions to command attention.

The elongated, gently boat-shaped top broadens through the center and narrows toward softly rounded ends. Its sweeping perimeter and finely tapered edge create a remarkable sense of lightness, appearing to float above the recessed supporting frame. Viewed from different angles, the outline shifts subtly, revealing a sculptural quality that extends beyond the table’s generous scale.

Four slender, subtly splayed legs taper toward brass sabots, while brass collars encircle their upper sections. These restrained metallic details articulate the transition between the substantial upper legs and their narrowing profiles. The brass retains a warm patina, introducing a softly aged counterpoint to the richness of the caviúna.

Constructed using solid caviúna and caviúna veneer, the table celebrates the wood’s extraordinary natural figuring. Long dark streaks, swirling patterns, and shifting honey, caramel, and reddish-brown tones animate the broad tabletop. The caviúna has aged beautifully, acquiring a depth of color that careful refinishing brings into focus. A restrained satin finish preserves its warmth and tactile character while allowing the grain to remain the defining decorative element.

Excellent craftsmanship is evident in the precision of the tabletop’s thin edge, the controlled taper of the legs, and the neatly integrated brass fittings. At 90 inches long, the table offers a commanding presence without visual heaviness—a generous setting for eight, distinguished by fluid contours, material depth, and elegant structural balance.
