Description
Designed by Jorge Zalszupin for L’Atelier, this Bergère lounge chair and matching ottoman combine sculptural elegance with the generous comfort of Brazilian modern residential furniture. The tall, gently inclined back and enveloping sides frame a wide, deep seat, creating a relaxed posture suited to extended lounging.
The solid Brazilian rosewood gives the ensemble its expressive character. Beautifully aged, its richly varied grain follows the sweeping armrests, which broaden beneath the hands before tapering toward the back. Slender, splayed legs lift the substantial upholstered body, while curved wooden supports cradle its lower edges. The ottoman repeats these details, extending the chair’s visual rhythm and inviting the sitter to stretch out.
Zalszupin helped shape Brazilian Modernism through a distinctive relationship between sculptural form, fine craftsmanship and experimentation with production. His work at L’Atelier brought particular sensitivity to wood, combining elegant construction with the possibilities of curved laminated forms and industrial manufacture.
Sourced from a private residence in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro, this restored ensemble has been reupholstered in cognac Italian leather and warm ivory chenille. The leather defines the exterior silhouette; the chenille lends softness and a subtle, shifting shimmer to the seat, backrest and ottoman. Together, these materials reinforce the design’s essential balance: architectural presence, tactile richness and deeply comfortable proportions.
