Description
Designed by Sergio Rodrigues (1927–2014) for OCA, Brazil, circa 1960, this wall mirror exemplifies the designer’s commitment to material authenticity and structural clarity. Rodrigues, a central figure in Brazilian modernism, consistently elevated native hardwoods through disciplined geometry and an emphasis on proportion rather than ornament. This work reflects that philosophy with restraint and confidence.
The composition is defined by a continuous circular frame in solid rosewood (jacarandá), its substantial profile establishing both presence and balance. The depth of the wood creates a subtle architectural border around the beveled crystal, allowing light to register along the inner edge while reinforcing the mirror’s radial symmetry. The result is a form that feels grounded yet fluid—anchored by mass, articulated through curvature.
Crafted from richly grained jacarandá, the frame reveals tonal variation ranging from deep burgundy to warm brown, animated by natural figuring characteristic of the species. The wood has been professionally refinished, preserving its material integrity while enhancing depth and surface clarity. The beveled crystal remains in good condition, with light wear consistent with age.
Function is resolved with economy: reflective surface and structural frame operate as a single unified gesture. As with many of Rodrigues’ works for OCA, the design distills modernist principles into an object of everyday utility. A thoughtfully resolved example of mid-century Brazilian design, this mirror stands as an authentic expression of Rodrigues’ enduring legacy.
