Description

A rare and visually commanding Brazilian modern screen designed by Sergio Rodrigues in the 1960s, exemplifying the designer’s ability to merge architectural presence with tactile richness. Conceived as both a functional divider and a sculptural object, the piece reflects Rodrigues’ broader philosophy: furniture as spatial architecture.

The screen is composed of three articulated panels framed in solid Brazilian rosewood (jacarandá). The wood has been carefully restored to reveal its expressive natural veining and deep tonal warmth, underscoring the quality of the original material and craftsmanship. Slim proportions and precise joinery give the structure a refined rhythm while maintaining visual strength.

What sets this screen apart is its sophisticated textile composition. The central panel is upholstered in a richly embroidered fabric featuring natural motifs inspired by Central Asian decorative traditions, introducing pattern, depth, and cultural dialogue. The outer panels are finished in an ultra-smooth, silky pistachio green Ultrasuede, offering a restrained counterbalance to the intricacy of the embroidery. This contrast—ornament and minimalism, texture and calm—creates a dynamic yet harmonious whole.

Designed for flexibility, the screen can be fully extended, partially angled, or completely folded, adapting effortlessly to a range of interiors. Whether used as a room divider, backdrop, or standalone sculptural element, it maintains a strong visual identity from every angle.

The piece presents in excellent vintage condition. The rosewood has been professionally refinished, and the upholstery is clean and well preserved, with minor age-appropriate wear consistent with its period.

A highly unusual and collectible work by one of Brazil’s most important designers, this screen is a statement of material intelligence, cultural layering, and timeless modern design.
