Description

This pair of 1950s Brazilian armchairs balances architectural clarity with generous comfort. Broad upholstered arms frame deep seats and gently inclined backs, while softened corners and finely outlined seams temper the rectilinear silhouette. Slender, tapered caviúna legs lift the substantial upholstered forms from the floor, giving the chairs an unexpected visual lightness.

Exposed caviúna rails along the lower sides provide a distinctive material accent. Their warm chestnut and reddish-brown tones, threaded with darker, undulating grain, contrast beautifully with the luminous upholstery. These horizontal wooden elements anchor the composition and reveal the expressive character of the timber.

The newly upholstered fabric has a richly textured, velvet-like chenille surface with an irregular, softly figured appearance. As light moves across it, the color shifts visually from pale champagne and creamy gold to deeper honey and warm ochre. This interplay brings depth to the broad upholstered planes. Beautifully restored, the chairs combine generously cushioned seats, supportive backs, and padded arms for exceptional comfort.

The pair evokes the wider culture of Brazilian cabinetmaking that flourished alongside celebrated designers during the 1950s. Joaquim Tenreiro’s advocacy of traditional woodworking and Geraldo de Barros’s work with Unilabor, founded in 1954, illustrate the period’s close relationship between skilled making and modern design. These chairs belong within that broader context, without implying attribution to either designer.
