Description
Attributed to Jorge Zalszupin (1922–2020), this Commander low armchair was introduced in 1973 as part of the designer’s response to Brazil’s expanding office and contract furniture market. Produced during a period when Brazilian modernism increasingly embraced industrial materials and serial production, the Commander reflects Zalszupin’s ability to balance sculptural form with functional rigor. While early examples were fitted with casters, later iterations—such as the present example—feature a fixed swivel base, lending greater compositional stability.
The chair is defined by a single continuous fiberglass shell forming both the seat and backrest. This unified volume establishes structural clarity while maintaining a fluid, uninterrupted profile. The low, reclining posture emphasizes comfort and horizontality, anchored by solid aluminum armrests that introduce material contrast and visual weight. The restrained geometry is consistent with Zalszupin’s broader body of work, where modernist discipline is tempered by ergonomic consideration.
Materials are employed with deliberate restraint. The fiberglass shell is upholstered in black leather in keeping with the original design intent, while the aluminum armrests retain a clean, utilitarian finish that underscores the chair’s industrial lineage. Functional elements—including the swivel base and reclining mechanism—are fully integrated into the form, reinforcing usability without visual excess.
This example has been professionally refinished and newly reupholstered in black leather, with attention paid to preserving original proportions and material integrity. The chair remains in excellent vintage condition and retains its original heritage plaque beneath the seat.
A resolved and increasingly scarce work, the Commander armchair stands as a clear expression of Brazilian modern design at a moment when innovation in materials and production reshaped the language of seating.
