Description
Designed by Giuseppe Scapinelli (1891–1982) in the 1950s, this set of four dining chairs reflects the designer’s distinctive ability to combine sculptural refinement with structural lightness. Produced during the formative decades of Brazilian modernism, the chairs embody Scapinelli’s characteristic balance between expressive form and careful craftsmanship.
Each chair is constructed in caviúna hardwood, whose rich tone and pronounced grain lend warmth and material depth to the slender composition. The frames rise into tall, gently angled backrests upholstered in black leather, creating a strong vertical presence while maintaining a restrained and elegant profile. The chairs stand on Scapinelli’s signature tapered “toothpick” legs, subtly finished with brass tips that introduce a refined metallic accent.
The wood has been professionally refinished, bringing forward the natural figure of the caviúna, while the leather upholstery remains in excellent condition. Light signs of age consistent with use are present and contribute to the character of the set.
A refined example of mid-century Brazilian seating, the design reflects Scapinelli’s sculptural approach to proportion and his enduring sensitivity to material integrity.
