Description

Designed by Jorge Zalszupin (1922–2020) and produced by L’Atelier in São Paulo, this foldable desk reflects the designer’s inventive approach to material and structure within Brazilian modernism. Zalszupin frequently balanced industrial logic with artisanal experimentation; here, that dialogue is expressed through both construction and surface.

Executed in Brazilian rosewood (jacarandá), the desk features a distinctive patchwork composition. Carefully arranged offcuts of varying tone and grain create a mosaic-like surface that distills the designer’s commitment to material efficiency while producing a richly modulated visual field. The rectilinear form is anchored by two broad planar supports and a continuous top, establishing a monolithic silhouette.

A central stretcher clad in green faux leather reinforces the structure, introducing measured contrast in texture and color while enhancing stability. The folding mechanism is discreetly integrated into the architecture, allowing the desk to collapse without compromising its structural clarity when in use.

An original L’Atelier seal beneath the tabletop confirms its provenance. The rosewood has been professionally refinished and presents in excellent vintage condition, with its tonal depth and grain preserved. A thoughtful example of Zalszupin’s resourceful modernism, the desk articulates innovation, discipline, and material integrity in equal measure.
