Description
Designed by Sergio Rodrigues for Oca in 1965, the “Eleh” coffee table / bench belongs to the Arcos series and exemplifies the architectural clarity of his Brazilian Modern furniture. Previously housed in a private residence in Laranjeiras, Rio de Janeiro, this example combines a broad rectangular surface with deep sides and four substantial rosewood legs. The legs rise slightly above the tabletop, visibly embracing the body, while paired circular chrome-plated accents punctuate the supports.
Its significance extends beyond form. The Eleh emerged during the consolidation of Brasília’s modern interiors, when Rodrigues helped establish a distinctly Brazilian furniture language within the capital’s institutional architecture. The Arcos furniture connects his work to the Palácio do Itamaraty, placing the series within an important dialogue between design, architecture, and national identity.
Constructed in Brazilian rosewood, or jacaranda, and rosewood veneer, the piece balances rigorous geometry with richly expressive grain. Long dark veins flow across the top, while more undulating figuring animates the sides and legs. Warm reddish-brown tones deepen into near-black streaks, giving the restrained silhouette exceptional visual depth.
The wood has been refinished, revealing this tonal variation beneath a soft satin sheen. Subtle surface traces remain visible, preserving the character of a vintage piece while allowing its materials and sculptural construction to read clearly.
