Description:
Designed by Carlo Hauner and Martin Eisler for Forma in the 1950s, this Brazilian Modern magazine rack transforms an everyday accessory into a striking sculptural object. A richly textured copper sling rests within a slender black painted metal frame, balancing the warmth of worked metal with the clarity of an open, architectural structure.
The design centers on a continuous copper sheet folded into a deep U-shaped cradle. Its upper edges curl around horizontal support rods, suspending the curved body just above the base. The surrounding frame follows a broader outline, with gently angled uprights, rounded lower corners, and projecting loop handles at either end. Narrow intervals between the copper and its supports give the composition a sense of lightness, allowing the construction to remain visible from every angle.
The hammered surface is particularly expressive. Closely spaced, irregular impressions create a shifting pattern of highlights and shadows, with luminous copper and russet tones giving way to deep brown patination within the recesses. Beautiful aging adds complexity to the metal, emphasizing its tactile character. The restrained black finish of the frame provides a crisp outline around this richly varied surface.
Featured in vintage publications, the model reflects the attention given to functional accessories within Brazilian modern interiors. Its appeal lies in the precision of a few essential elements: a folded sheet, an economical supporting frame, and a strong contrast of texture and color.
Designed to hold magazines and reading material, the rack sits comfortably beside a lounge chair, sofa, or desk. Its shallow profile makes it easy to place, while the sculptural copper body remains compelling even when empty. A distinctive example of 1950s Brazilian Modern design, it brings material richness and purposeful form to a small but considered part of the interior.
