A sculptural expression of Brazilian modernism, the “Canoa” sofa by Liceu de Artes e Ofícios balances architectural precision with an unmistakably Brazilian design vocabulary. Its defining feature is the pair of elongated, gently curved armrests known as canoa—Portuguese for canoe. Inspired by the slender wooden canoes of the Amazon, these fluid elements extend beyond the frame and terminate in softly rounded ends, giving the sofa its name and distinctive visual identity.
The expansive four-seat composition is built around a finely articulated solid jacarandá, or Brazilian rosewood, structure. A continuous apron anchors the sofa, while tapered legs, cylindrical rear supports and exposed horizontal rails create a sense of rhythm and visual lightness. From the back, the long rosewood stretcher traces the full width of the frame, revealing the clarity of its construction and the quality of its joinery.
The naturally aged rosewood has developed a rich, luminous patina. Deep reddish-brown tones, darker mineral figuring and warm amber highlights move across the grain, preserving the material’s depth and character rather than obscuring the marks of time. This mature surface gives the frame a warmth and dimensionality that newly finished wood cannot replicate.
The sofa has been newly upholstered in a thick, high-pile warm camel velvet. Its dense, tactile surface catches the light with subtle variation, shifting between honey, ochre and softened caramel tones. Four generously scaled seat cushions and four tailored back cushions—with restrained button detailing—introduce softness and comfort while maintaining the design’s long, low profile. The warm camel upholstery forms a refined tonal dialogue with the aged rosewood, emphasizing both the richness of the timber and the sofa’s sculptural lines.
