Description

A disciplined and architecturally resolved set of four Brazilian Modern dining chairs by Celina, produced in the 1960s and executed in solid jacaranda (Brazilian rosewood) with woven cane backrests and original ultra-suede seats.

Celina operated within the São Paulo modernist ecosystem at a time when Brazilian design was refining its identity through proportion, material integrity, and structural restraint. These chairs embody that moment with clarity. Their elongated, tapered legs establish a vertical rhythm, while the subtly angled backs create a poised and intentional stance. The geometry is spare but not austere — every line calibrated, every transition deliberate.

The jacaranda frames have been professionally refinished to a satin presentation, revealing dramatic grain movement and tonal layering characteristic of old-growth Brazilian rosewood. The visual depth of the wood — from amber undertones to darker, almost ink-like veining — reinforces the sculptural reading of each chair as both object and structure.

One chair retain their original cane, preserving period authenticity. The remaining three have been newly re-caned in faithful adherence to the original weave pattern, ensuring structural integrity while maintaining visual continuity across the set. The dialogue between dense hardwood, permeable cane, and supple ultra-suede upholstery reflects the Brazilian Modernist vocabulary: lightness through transparency, warmth through materiality, and elegance through proportion rather than ornament.

Sold as a set of four, these chairs represent a refined expression of 1960s Brazilian dining culture — where furniture was conceived as architectural accompaniment to space. Ideal for collectors and interiors that privilege material intelligence, structural clarity, and the enduring authority of jacaranda.
