Description

Striking in silhouette and richly textured, this set of eight dining chairs brings together the warmth of caviúna wood and the understated shimmer of newly upholstered chenille. The ensemble comprises six original Brazilian chairs by Giuseppe Scapinelli from the 1950s and two newly made matching chairs crafted from reclaimed caviúna to complete the set.

The design balances an elongated profile with softly contoured upholstery. Tall rectangular backrests rise between exposed wooden uprights, their gentle curvature lending depth to an otherwise disciplined outline. Generously padded seats extend slightly beyond the side rails, softening the transition between fabric and frame. Below, slender tapered legs give the chairs a light, poised stance, while small round wooden plugs punctuate the rails and uprights with a quiet construction detail. Viewed together, the repeated verticals create a strong architectural rhythm around a dining table.

The caviúna frames display honey-caramel brown tones, deeper reddish undertones, and expressive dark grain. Professional refinishing brings out this natural movement beneath a restrained satin-matte surface, allowing the wood’s character to remain visible without excessive gloss. The two newly made chairs follow the original model in reclaimed caviúna, bringing material continuity to the expanded ensemble while remaining distinct from the six period examples.

All eight chairs are newly upholstered in warm taupe chenille with a subtle golden cast and a soft, silky finish. The fabric shifts with the light and viewing angle, moving between muted taupe, champagne, and warmer gold highlights. Its fine surface texture adds depth without overwhelming the clean lines of the frames. Plush seats and padded backrests make the chairs exceptionally comfortable, inviting long, unhurried meals.

Featured in vintage interior publications, the design reflects the appeal of upholstered dining furniture within Brazil’s sophisticated mid-century domestic interiors. Its combination of expressive hardwood, slender proportions, and generous comfort gives it a presence that remains compelling today. The six original chairs were acquired from a private residence in Rio de Janeiro; together with the two later matching additions, they form a cohesive dining ensemble rooted in Scapinelli’s 1950s design.
