Brazilian Modern Sculptural Armchair in Imbuia & Grey Bouclé, Michel Arnoult, 1960s — Lot 154C

Description:

An elongated back and an exceptionally spare wooden frame give this 1960s Brazilian Modern armchair by Michel Arnoult its distinctive sculptural presence. Cylindrical imbuia posts anchor the composition, while slender horizontal arms and substantial lower rails establish a precise architectural rhythm. Open sides reveal the upholstered profile, allowing the chair to retain visual lightness despite its generous height.

The backrest’s flowing contour is central to both its appearance and comfort. Its pronounced lumbar curve and supportive padding cradle the lower back, while the gently reclined upper section and softly crowned seat encourage a relaxed sitting position. Fine grey bouclé introduces a tactile counterpoint to the imbuia’s deep brown tones and expressive grain. The restrained upholstery allows the relationship between structure and cushioning to remain clearly legible from every angle.

French-born and established in Brazil, Arnoult helped expand Brazilian Modernism through furniture conceived for everyday life. Through Mobília Contemporânea, he advanced serial production and demountable construction, pursuing accessible, well-designed furnishings with an emphasis on simplicity and practical comfort.

This armchair expresses that approach with particular elegance: economical lines, warm wood, and carefully shaped upholstery bring the functional intelligence of 1960s Brazilian furniture into a quietly commanding form.
