Description

Designed by Joaquim Tenreiro in Brazil in the late 1950s, this pair of Brazilian modern armchairs presents an architecturally refined balance of slender metal framing, generous upholstery, and carefully measured proportions. The design expresses the visual lightness and clarity associated with Tenreiro’s furniture: an economy of line in which structure, comfort, and silhouette form a cohesive whole. Their presence is quietly sculptural, with the exposed framework giving definition to the upholstered volumes while allowing the surrounding space to remain part of the composition.

The metal-frame construction offers a distinctive expression of a designer closely associated with Brazilian hardwood furniture. Here, the slender supports establish a graphic rhythm beneath and around the seating, emphasizing the relationship between solid form and negative space. The framework’s bends and connections contribute to the chairs’ architectural character, while the softness of the upholstery tempers their linear precision. Viewed from the front, side, or back, the design maintains a sense of continuity, with each element contributing to a balanced and legible silhouette.

The frames have been professionally restored and plated in aged brass, introducing a warm surface with a beautifully subdued patina. The finish has been carefully moderated to retain gentle tonal variation and a softened sheen, allowing light to reveal the structure without overwhelming it. Its character lies in the depth of the brass surface: subtle changes in tone articulate the fine framework and lend the chairs a richness that remains restrained. The aged brass plating is part of the present restoration, bringing a considered material treatment to the vintage metal frames.

Custom-made brass sabots complete the legs, providing a precise finishing detail at the point where the chairs meet the floor. Their scale and placement reinforce the delicacy of the supports and the coherence of the restored composition. Together with the aged brass framework, these elements establish a consistent material language, giving attention to details that are integral to the chairs’ overall presence.

Both armchairs have been newly upholstered in luxurious Forrest Green velvet. This cotton velvet introduces a rich forest green tone, a soft tactile surface, and an elegant matte finish. Its pile responds subtly to changing light, lending depth to the upholstered forms while preserving the clarity of their contours. Against the warmth of the aged brass, the green velvet creates a material dialogue that is expressive without becoming ornamental.
