Description
Produced by Branco & Preto in the 1950s, this bar cabinet with integrated side table exemplifies the studio’s disciplined approach to proportion, material richness, and functional clarity within Brazilian modernism.
Executed in caviúna hardwood, the composition is defined by a rectilinear cabinet volume elevated on four tapered legs, balanced by an adjoining open table surface. The cabinet doors reveal a mirrored interior—an intentional material contrast that amplifies light and depth when opened, reinforcing the object’s function as a bar. The adjacent tabletop is inset with glass, introducing a refined counterpoint to the density and warmth of the wood.
The caviúna displays a vivid, highly figured grain, arranged to emphasize symmetry across the cabinet façade. This natural patterning becomes the primary ornamental language of the piece, framed by clean edges and restrained hardware. The recent professional refinishing has restored clarity and luster to the surface while preserving the integrity of the original geometry.
The mirrored and glass elements remain intact; the structure is sound and presents in excellent condition, with light, age-appropriate wear consistent with careful use.
A materially articulate and architecturally composed example of mid-century Brazilian design—functional in purpose, expressive in grain, and quietly sophisticated in execution.
