Description

Designed by Sergio Rodrigues for Brazil’s growing office furniture market, the “Adolpho” credenza has the low proportions and expressive timber frame characteristic of his work in the 1960s. Long rails of solid Brazilian rosewood (jacarandá) extend just beyond the corner posts, their softly rounded ends giving the silhouette a sculptural finish. Paired chrome buttons mark the joints and echo the circular finger pulls recessed into the four drawer fronts.

The rosewood has aged to a warm reddish brown. Across the front, dark ribbons of grain open into amber whorls, particularly vivid along the upper rail. One sliding door has been reupholstered in warm taupe leather. Its fine pebble grain and lightly cushioned edges bring a tactile softness to the facade, while the original black Formica top gives the piece a crisp upper edge.

Four broad, shallow drawers occupy the left side. The sliding panels reveal a wood-lined interior with shelved compartments for books or tableware and a narrow, full-height bay for upright storage. The credenza is finished on all sides. Across the back, a broad expanse of vertically grained rosewood sits within the darker frame, making the piece especially suited to placement behind a sofa or as a freestanding room divider.

Sergio Rodrigues helped define Brazilian modernism by creating furniture for the country’s emerging modern architecture from materials familiar to Brazilian homes, particularly jacarandá and leather. At Oca, the shop and gallery he founded in Rio de Janeiro in 1955, he also gave other Brazilian designers a place to exhibit furniture under their own names. The “Adolpho” shows his sensibility in an everyday office piece: its strongest sculptural detail is the frame itself, visible wherever a rosewood rail meets a post.
