Description
An exceptionally elegant Brazilian Modern console from the 1950s, distinguished by its asymmetric silhouette, richly figured hardwood, and beautifully patinated brass details. Its elongated proportions and floating glass top evoke the refinement of Italian modernism, while the expressive wood grain gives the piece a warm, commanding presence.
The composition balances a slender bank of three adjacent drawers with a deeper cabinet containing three wide, stacked drawers. This stepped arrangement creates a sculptural interplay of solid volumes and open space, allowing substantial storage to retain an unusually light appearance. A clear glass surface extends above the cabinetry, elevated on cylindrical supports over the lower section and following the softly rounded contour at the opposite end.
The woodwork rewards close attention. Dramatic grain stretches across the drawer fronts, framed by fine contrasting borders that articulate the cabinetry with precision. Along the curved outer side, closely spaced vertical fluting introduces texture and rhythm, softening the transition from front to side. Slender tapered legs continue the upward lightness of the design, terminating in brass sabots that give each foot a delicate golden finish.
Rectangular brass handles punctuate the drawers with restrained geometric accents. Their beautiful patina brings depth and character to the metal, complementing the warmth of the hardwood and the subtle gleam of the sabots. The carefully resolved proportions, fine edging, and curved fluted detailing speak to excellent craftsmanship throughout.
Both functional and sculptural, this six-drawer console brings an assured elegance to an entrance hall, living room, or dining space. Its distinctive character lies in the balance of richly worked surfaces and visual restraint—a substantial piece of Brazilian mid-century furniture that appears almost suspended beneath its glass top.
