Description
This Brazilian modern coffee table from the 1960s combines an elegant oval silhouette with richly figured rosewood and a carefully articulated sculptural base. Its low, elongated proportions give it a composed presence, while the rounded perimeter softens its profile and allows easy circulation within a seating arrangement.
The tabletop features rosewood veneer arranged in a striking radial pattern. Carefully aligned sections converge toward the center, creating broad chevrons and mirrored waves of grain that unfold across the oval surface. Dark, sinuous figuring moves through warm reddish-brown and amber tones, revealing the depth and beautiful tonal variation of aged rosewood. A rounded solid rosewood border frames the composition, with a fine recessed line defining the transition between the patterned surface and its gently raised edge.
Below, two cylindrical supports anchor an open framework of horizontal stretchers and outward-reaching feet. Each foot terminates in a turned cylindrical element with a domed cap and subtly stepped detailing. The interplay of rounded uprights, straight connecting members, and small sculptural terminals gives the base a distinctive rhythm while preserving visual openness beneath the top.
Excellent craftsmanship is evident in the precise veneer alignment, the neatly fitted sections of the curved perimeter, and the controlled transitions between turned and rectilinear solid rosewood components. The wood itself provides much of the ornament, allowing the design to remain sculptural yet restrained.
Convenient in scale, the table offers a useful surface for books, flowers, and everyday objects without overwhelming a room. Its expressive grain and balanced construction make it a compelling example of Brazilian mid-century furniture, equally suited to an intimate seating group or a layered contemporary interior.
