Description
Designed in 1958 by Sérgio Rodrigues, the Mucki bench brings architectural clarity to the expressive beauty of Brazilian rosewood. Produced by Oca, this monumental example spans 98 inches—just over eight feet—yet retains a remarkably low, open silhouette. Its generous proportions give it a commanding presence without visual heaviness, allowing it to function as seating, a low display surface, or an elegant boundary within a spacious interior.
The design is organized around a sequence of transverse wooden slats, precisely spaced across two substantial longitudinal rails. Narrow gaps introduce light and shadow into the surface, creating a measured rhythm that emphasizes the bench’s length. Six rectangular legs, including a central pair, support the extended structure, while the apron tapers toward the ends to lighten its profile. Small rounded rosewood buttons punctuate the slats in two orderly rows, adding a tactile, almost playful detail to the disciplined geometry.
The wood reveals an exceptional range of color: deep chocolate brown and reddish undertones enriched by amber and caramel passages. Dark veins travel through the surface in sweeping lines, irregular waves, and concentrated swirls, giving each slat its own character. Across the apron, the grain forms a continuous visual landscape beneath the repeated seat elements. A restrained satin finish preserves this depth and tonal variation, lending the rosewood a soft luster.
The craftsmanship is evident in the consistency of the slat spacing, the carefully softened edges, and the balance between substantial supporting members and finely resolved details. The rounded wooden buttons are especially characteristic of Rodrigues’s ability to make construction part of the design’s expression. Here, precision serves warmth: the bench feels considered and architectural, while remaining unmistakably human in its material and detail.
The Mucki belongs to Rodrigues’s formative Oca period, following the establishment of the company in Rio de Janeiro in 1955. During these years, he helped define a distinctly Brazilian modern furniture language rooted in native hardwoods, direct construction, and an informal approach to living. Alongside the sculptural Mocho stool and the enveloping Mole armchair, the Mucki demonstrates the breadth of that vision—expressing through repetition and proportion the same material confidence found in his more generously upholstered designs.
A central figure in Brazilian modernism, Rodrigues brought furniture into dialogue with the country’s emerging modern architecture while preserving the warmth of local materials and craft traditions. The Mucki offers a particularly clear expression of that contribution: a functional wooden platform elevated through rhythm, scale, and the natural richness of rosewood.
