Description

Designed in 2001, the “Diz” armchair is a distinguished expression of Sergio Rodrigues’ mature work, bringing his lifelong exploration of comfort into an entirely wooden form. This pair combines sculptural presence with an inviting, relaxed posture, demonstrating how carefully shaped surfaces can support the body without upholstery.

The design unfolds through a sequence of sweeping curves. A broad, gently reclined backrest narrows toward its base, while the concave seat cradles the sitter beneath long, outward-reaching armrests. Rounded edges soften the silhouette and the points of contact with the body. Below, splayed legs and sculpted side supports establish a grounded stance, with open spaces between the structural elements lending visual lightness to the generous proportions. Viewed from behind, the expansive back becomes an equally compelling feature, allowing the chairs to stand freely within a room.

The hardwood displays a beautiful caramel and amber palette, enriched by honey-colored highlights and deeper brown veins. Flowing grain patterns animate the broad backrests and seats, while the satin finish brings out their depth with a restrained natural luster. The interplay of these expansive surfaces with the rounded frames reveals the wood’s character from every angle. The maker’s mark is present on both rear legs of each armchair.

The Diz exemplifies the precision of craftsmanship associated with Rodrigues’ later designs: carefully resolved connections, smoothly finished contours, and a close relationship between structure and sculptural form. Its construction pairs a solid hardwood frame with molded, veneered seat and back panels, enabling the enveloping curves that define its distinctive silhouette.

A central figure in Brazilian modernism, Rodrigues helped establish a furniture language rooted in local materials, expressive forms, and an informal approach to living. The Diz carries that philosophy into the twenty-first century. Rather than relying on the abundant cushioning associated with his celebrated upholstered seating, it achieves its welcoming character through the shaping of wood itself.

Recognized with first place in the furniture category at the 20th Museu da Casa Brasileira Design Award in 2006, the Diz stands as an important late-career achievement—a continuation of Rodrigues’ modernist principles and a testament to his enduring inventiveness.
