Description

Produced in the 1960s at the Liceu de Artes e Ofícios, this pair of armchairs reflects the academic rigor and craft discipline that shaped Brazilian Modernism during its formative decades. The Liceu played a central role in bridging traditional woodworking knowledge with modernist principles, producing furniture that balanced structural clarity with material expressiveness.

The frames are crafted from solid Jacaranda rosewood, carefully refinished to reveal the wood’s naturally varied grain and tonal depth. Leather upholstery has been newly executed following the original pattern, preserving the intended proportions, posture, and visual rhythm. Rather than relying on softness alone, comfort here is achieved through measured angles, supportive backrests, and balanced seat height.

Acquired in Petrópolis, a city closely tied to Brazil’s modern architectural culture, these armchairs represent Brazilian Modernism at its most disciplined—where education, craftsmanship, and modern design language converge.
