Description
Designed in the 1950s by Carlo Hauner for Forma, this exceptional bed and headrest formed part of a complete and highly cohesive bedroom suite, a rarity within Brazilian Modern furniture. The original ensemble comprised the bed, a vanity with stool, a daybed, a wall unit, and a telephone bench, conceived as an integrated architectural environment rather than a collection of individual objects. Period photographs illustrate the suite installed as intended, reinforcing Hauner’s holistic approach to domestic design.
Executed entirely in Brazilian rosewood (Jacaranda), the bed consists of two sculptural bases supported by cone-shaped legs, emphasizing lightness and rhythm. The headboard integrates a central caned panel with built-in shelves and drawers, balancing material richness with functional clarity. The caning has been sensitively renewed, respecting original proportion and texture.
The piece retains the original Forma manufacture seal on the reverse, confirming authenticity and production provenance. Acquired from a modernist residence in Teresópolis, this work exemplifies Hauner’s Brazilian period: abundant rosewood, restrained brass accents, and slender architectural structure. As a surviving component of a complete bedroom system, this bed represents a rare and important example of Brazilian Modernism at its most ambitious and integrated.
