Description

Designed during a formative chapter in Brazilian modern furniture, this cerejeira credenza brings together the cabinetmaking tradition of Laubisch & Hirth and the emerging modern language of Joaquim Tenreiro. Its generous horizontal proportions, restrained detailing, and expressive wood grain convey a growing emphasis on material and structure that would help define Brazilian design.

Four doors establish a measured rhythm across the façade, their broad surfaces revealing cathedral-like grain in honey, amber, and warm golden brown. Fine perimeter moldings frame the wood, while subtly beveled edges catch the light and articulate the cabinet’s geometry. Discreet brass keyholes preserve the quiet composition. Beneath the rectangular case, four tapered, outward-splayed legs introduce lift and an elegant counterpoint to its substantial volume. Two internal shelves and two concealed drawers provide considered storage.

Laubisch & Hirth’s Rio de Janeiro workshops were an important setting for Tenreiro’s development. His early modern furniture emerged there in 1942, before he established his own firm in 1943. This period helped lay the groundwork for his enduring contribution: furniture that united skilled woodworking, visual lightness, and the expressive possibilities of Brazilian timber.

Originally from a private residence in Teresópolis, this beautifully restored credenza retains the manufacturer’s seal and date stamp described in its provenance. Its renewed finish reveals the depth of the cerejeira grain, giving lasting presence to a design from Brazilian modernism’s early years.
