Description
Generous proportions and beautifully articulated woodwork define this Brazilian modern coffee table by Jorge Jabour for Móveis Cantu. Measuring 53 inches wide, 37 inches deep, and 15 inches high, its broad marble surface rests above an open rosewood framework, balancing substantial scale with a remarkably light silhouette.
The defining baton legs introduce a sculptural softness: elongated, gently tapered supports with rounded ends that emphasize the density and warmth of solid jacarandá. Low perimeter stretchers establish a continuous horizontal rhythm, while the upper rails curve downward near each leg, creating graceful openings beneath the stone. These carefully shaped transitions give the structure its distinctive character.
Beautifully restored, the rosewood reveals tobacco, reddish brown, and near-black figuring beneath a lustrous finish. Above, the marble’s cream, sand, and taupe tones form a richly patterned surface, bringing a quieter palette to the dramatic grain below.
Architect Jorge Jabour Mauad, alongside Osires Cunha Meale, helped shape Móveis Cantu’s contribution to Brazilian modern interiors. Their work connected furniture design with architecture, combining Brazilian hardwoods, marble, and considered construction to furnish contemporary homes and workplaces. Cantu belongs to the wider network of architect-led manufacturers essential to the development of Brazil’s modern design culture.
This table expresses that approach through the relationship between its materials, sculpted supports, and open structure—a substantial centerpiece whose refinement becomes clearer in the details.
