Wood Restoration Is Art

For our wood master Paulo, restoration is an expression of art, like painting.

In this video, Paulo is restoring the iconic Arimelo Coffee Table designed by  Sergio Rodrigues in 1958, entirely made in Brazilian Rosewood, known as Jacaranda.

After removing old layers of varnish, Paulo gives a diagnosis of the piece. In this stage he “heals” the piece from damage, such as dents or poor quality varnish that alters the original color and texture of the wood.

Then Paulo, using a brush and natural inks alleviates color damage making the surface uniform. Just then he proceeds with varnishing, using materials that will enhance the wood texture and color, as is seen in the images.

“Restoring furniture is not about making a piece look new but to make the old piece look as close as it looked originally” The last images are the closest this coffee table looks when it was produced 64 years ago.
