Description
The Kilin armchair was designed in 1973 by Sergio Rodrigues(1927-2014) and produced by Oca. The chair is constructed from solid Brazilian rosewood, also known as jacaranda, composed of two sculptural side frames joined by cross supports that give the piece both structural clarity and visual lightness.
The seat and backrest are formed from a single, continuous piece of leather, tensioned within the wood structure to create a suspended, ergonomic surface that naturally conforms to the body. This integration of material and form exemplifies Rodrigues’s approach to comfort-driven design, where leather and wood appear to float within the frame while remaining integral to its function.
The Kilin armchair takes its name from a personal reference: a tribute to Rodrigues’s wife, Vera Beatriz (1931–2017), whom he affectionately nicknamed “esquilinho,” meaning “little squirrel” in Portuguese. The name Kilin is a phonetic adaptation of this term, underscoring the intimate and human scale that defines much of Rodrigues’s work.
