Description

Designed in the 1960s by Sergio Rodrigues, the Alex side table is a distilled expression of Brazilian modernism at its most architectural and humanistic. Compact in scale yet rich in detail, the table reflects Rodrigues’s commitment to structure, material honesty, and the expressive potential of wood—principles that defined his role as one of Brazil’s most influential designers.

The table is constructed around a solid central column in freijó wood, rising to support a circular rosewood top whose softly rounded edge introduces warmth and tactility. Four projecting supports beneath the top articulate the transition between vertical and horizontal planes, while the cruciform base anchors the composition with both visual stability and sculptural clarity. The geometry recalls the language of Brazilian modern architecture of the period—columns, cantilevers, and elevated planes—reinterpreted at an intimate, domestic scale.

Rodrigues’s design language consistently softened modernist rigor through curves and mass, favoring pieces that feel grounded, approachable, and deeply tactile. In the Alex table, this philosophy is evident in the careful balance between weight and lightness, precision and warmth. The contrast between the lighter freijó structure and the darker rosewood top further enhances the table’s architectural legibility.

The wood has been expertly refinished and is in excellent condition, with the natural grain and tonal variation fully revealed. Elegant yet unpretentious, the Alex side table functions equally as a practical surface and as a sculptural object—an enduring example of Brazilian modern design rooted in craftsmanship and architectural thought.
