Description:
A graceful pair of Brazilian Modern chairs from the 1950s, combining richly figured rosewood with original light-toned upholstery and distinctive nailhead details. Tall, open backs and finely tapered legs give the pair a sculptural presence, with an elegance rooted in proportion and the expressive beauty of the wood.
Each backrest widens gently toward a curved crest rail, enclosing a rhythmic sequence of slender wooden spindles. Their subtly fanned arrangement lends the chairs an almost musical delicacy, allowing light to pass through the frames. Seen in profile, the backward inclination of the backrest and the outward sweep of the rear legs introduce a fluid line, balanced by the quieter verticality of the front legs. Broad upholstered seats soften this linear structure, their rounded corners and neatly folded edges providing a restrained contrast to the dark rosewood.
The wood is particularly compelling. Warm amber and reddish-brown tones are threaded with deep, dark veining, following the contours of the uprights, crest rails, and legs. Beautiful aging adds depth to these surfaces, revealing natural variations that give each chair its individual character. The original upholstery preserves an important part of the pair’s material history, while rows of dark, rounded upholstery nails accent the rear corners of the seats. These small details remain visible from behind, making the chairs as engaging in the round as they are from the front.
The finely shaped frames, delicate spindle work, and carefully resolved transitions speak to the quality of Brazilian furniture craftsmanship in the 1950s. Their poised curves and elongated proportions suggest the influence of Giuseppe Scapinelli’s sculptural vocabulary, without constituting an attribution to his workshop.
Equally suited to a dining setting, a writing table, or as occasional seating, the pair brings together visual lightness, beautifully aged rosewood, and the enduring character of original details. Their appeal lies in the precision of the silhouette: expressive, slender, and quietly sophisticated.
