Description

Generous in scale and striking in silhouette, this 1950s Brazilian Modern armchair by Antonio de Almeida Rebouças combines expressive woodwork with richly weathered saddle leather. Its tall, reclining back, broad seat, and dramatically splayed legs give it an elemental, almost ceremonial presence. Open sides and sharply drawn diagonals balance its substantial proportions, creating a chair that feels both grounded and visually dynamic.

A lesser-known figure within the broader history of Brazilian Modernism, Rebouças worked across architecture, furniture design, sculpture, and painting. Based in Bahia, he contributed to the development of modern architecture in Salvador while pursuing an artistic practice that extended to furniture in wood and metal. His multidisciplinary career represents the close relationship between art, architecture, and domestic furnishings within Brazil’s modern movement.

Here, that relationship finds expression in a frame whose construction defines its sculptural character. The wooden perimeter sweeps around the back and seat, with softened edges and an outward-flaring front rail. Extended rear legs establish a pronounced diagonal, while broad, gently curved armrests rest on angular supports. Visible grain follows these contours, lending warmth and movement to the architectural composition.

Cognac saddle leather forms the seat and back, outlined by exposed metal studs. Its weathered surface is integral to the chair’s appeal: darker patches, creasing, and visible wear introduce tonal depth and a tangible record of use. The leather’s irregular patina complements the warmth of the wood, giving the piece an individuality that comes with age.

With its expansive seat and relaxed back angle, the chair offers a generous posture for lounging. Its commanding scale and tactile materials make it a distinctive focal point, equally compelling in profile, from behind, or viewed frontally.

Acquired directly from the designer’s daughter, this example carries a personal connection to Rebouças and his family. Provenance available upon request.
