Description
Attributed to an unknown Brazilian workshop and produced in the 1950s, this pair of torchière floor lamps exemplifies Brazil’s regional interpretation of Art Deco. While grounded in the movement’s emphasis on symmetry and geometric order, the design reflects a distinctly Brazilian sensibility through its use of native materials and restrained architectural presence. The lamps stand as refined expressions of mid-century lighting, where international modernism is articulated through local craft.
The form is defined by a vertically oriented, symmetrical composition anchored by a stepped base in jacarandá (Brazilian rosewood). Streamlined lines guide the eye upward, while chrome accents and crystal elements introduce contrast and controlled luminosity. The balance between solid mass and light-reflective materials lends the pair a sculptural clarity without excess.
Material integrity is central to the design. The rosewood displays a rich, dense grain and deep tonal variation, carefully finished to emphasize its natural character. Transitions between wood, chrome, and crystal are handled with precision, reflecting a disciplined approach to craftsmanship that privileges proportion and structure over ornament.
The lamps are presented in excellent vintage condition and have been professionally rewired for U.S. outlets and power standards.
