Description

Designed by Geraldo de Barros (1923–1998), this desk and matching chair exemplify the designer’s disciplined approach to structure and material within Brazilian modernism. Closely aligned with his work in concrete art and industrial design, the ensemble reflects de Barros’ commitment to clarity, modular logic, and the integration of art into functional objects.

The desk is defined by a rectilinear jacarandá (Brazilian rosewood) top anchored by a slender black iron frame, creating a measured balance between visual weight and lightness. Two large drawers are seamlessly integrated beneath the surface, reinforcing the desk’s architectural logic and structural clarity.

The rosewood has been professionally refinished, revealing its dense grain and rich tonal variation while preserving crisp lines. The accompanying chair, also designed by de Barros, features a metal frame and two-tone leather upholstery that has been newly reupholstered in period-appropriate materials. Together, the pieces articulate a unified design language where function is fully absorbed into form.

Originating from a private collection and documented in vintage publications, the set is presented in excellent vintage condition. A rare and thoughtfully resolved ensemble, it stands as an authentic and collectible example of de Barros’ contribution to Brazilian modern furniture.
