Description
Designed by José Zanine Caldas (1919–2001), Brazil, circa 1950s, this accent or telephone table reflects the designer’s early exploration of plywood as a primary material within Brazilian modernism. Zanine’s work from this period is grounded in structural clarity and material economy, aligning progressive form with practical use.
The table is articulated through a compact, two-tier composition supported by four sculpturally cut legs. The geometry is direct and balanced, with subtle curvature at the leg junctions softening the rectilinear planes. This interplay between precision and sculptural restraint is consistent with Zanine’s broader design language of the 1950s.
Constructed in plywood and finished in black paint, the piece emphasizes form and construction over surface embellishment. The uniform finish reinforces the graphic quality of the silhouette while allowing the structure to remain legible. Zanine’s manufacturing seal, located beneath the tabletop, confirms authorship and situates the table within his documented production.
Function is integrated seamlessly into the design. The dual shelves provide practical surface and storage capacity, supporting its use as a telephone table, side table, or accent piece without visual excess.
Presented in excellent vintage condition, with wear consistent with age.
