Description

Designed by Sergio Rodrigues in the 1970s, the Cuiabá dining set reflects the designer’s distinctive approach to Brazilian modernism—combining structural clarity, expressive joinery, and a deep respect for native materials. Rodrigues (1927–2014) is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in Brazilian design, known for creating furniture that translates the character of Brazilian culture and craftsmanship into modern forms. His work often balances architectural rigor with sculptural warmth, emphasizing the natural qualities of wood.

Produced during a period when Brazilian rosewood had become restricted and increasingly endangered, this set was constructed using other native Brazilian hardwoods, reflecting a broader shift in Brazilian furniture production during the 1970s toward sustainable alternatives while maintaining the richness and durability associated with traditional materials.

The chairs are defined by a geometric, box-like base and a slightly inclined backrest, creating a visually grounded yet comfortable seating posture. Each backrest features a circular cut-out detail, a subtle motif that is echoed in the accompanying table. The seats and backrests are upholstered in ultra-suede, providing a soft contrast to the warmth of the wood structure.

The dining table mirrors the chairs’ architectural language through its robust trestle base and clean rectilinear lines. The wood surfaces have been carefully restored, and the set remains in excellent condition.

The set is offered as a complete ensemble or may be acquired individually.
