Description
Crafted in pau marfim (ivorywood) with a deep ebony finish, this armchair reflects the sculptural discipline and material contrast central to Brazilian mid-century design. The composition is defined by a gently reclined upholstered shell framed by a dark wooden structure, where linear elements and softened volumes achieve a measured equilibrium.
The back is articulated by a sequence of vertical wooden rods set within the frame, introducing rhythm and transparency to the rear elevation. This structural detail reinforces the chair’s architectural clarity, allowing the supporting framework to remain legible while visually lightening the form. The arm supports extend forward in a continuous gesture, terminating in restrained, planar armrests that emphasize horizontality.
The seat and backrest have been reupholstered in a light gray textile, tailored closely to the contours of the frame. The neutral tone underscores the contrast between the softness of the upholstery and the precision of the ebony-finished wood. The result is a composition that balances comfort with structural expression.
This model has been widely documented in both period and contemporary publications, underscoring its enduring presence within the canon of Brazilian modern furniture. A second armchair of the same design is available; the only distinction lies in the upholstery tone, offering a subtle variation within an otherwise identical structural framework.
A chair of the same model is offered in a different upholstery under (Lot 584)
