Description

This sculptural reclining chair was designed in Brazil during the 1960s by Ernesto Hauner, a key figure in the development of Brazilian modern furniture and co-founder of Forma. The piece reflects Hauner’s interest in combining refined craftsmanship with light, functional structures, resulting in seating that is both expressive and technically resolved.

The chair features a hardwood frame with Brazilian Rosewood (Jacarandá) armrests, paired with slender metal legs that lend the composition a sense of visual lightness. The gently angled silhouette allows the chair to recline into two distinct positions, offering a balance between comfort and architectural clarity. The contrast between the warmth of the wood, the delicacy of the metal structure, and the softness of the upholstery exemplifies the material dialogue central to Brazilian modern design.

The chair has been carefully restored, with newly upholstered soft pink leather, refinished armrests, and a reinforced reclining mechanism to ensure both comfort and long-term functionality. The leather upholstery remains smooth and supple, while the structure retains its original proportions and design intent. The piece is presented in excellent condition, with only minimal signs of age consistent with its period.

An elegant and rare example of Brazilian modern seating, this reclining chair stands as a testament to Ernesto Hauner’s contribution to postwar design and remains highly relevant within both historic and contemporary interiors.
