Description

Designed in the 1960s by Jorge Jabour for Cantù Móveis e Interiores Ltda., this elegant set of four armchairs exemplifies the refined architectural language emerging in Brazilian design during the period. Each chair is crafted entirely in solid Brazilian rosewood (Jacarandá), showcasing dramatic grain movement and richly saturated tonal variation — a material choice that situates the model within the most desirable tier of Brazilian Modern production.

The sculpted, slightly inclined backrest and integrated arm structure create a continuous, fluid silhouette while offering remarkable ergonomic comfort. Originally produced with either cane or upholstered seats, the model reflects a highly adaptable design approach — equally suited as dining chairs, armchairs, or refined office seating. This versatility speaks directly to the era’s emphasis on fluid living, where furniture was designed to transition seamlessly between residential and executive interiors.

As shown, the chairs translate effortlessly across contexts — functioning with equal strength as dining armchairs, accent seating, or desk chairs — each configuration reinforcing the clarity and adaptability of the design.

The rosewood has aged beautifully and has been professionally refinished to a satin-matte sheen, highlighting the depth and complexity of its natural veining without appearing overly polished. Each chair features a newly upholstered bouclé cushion, selected for its soft texture and understated warmth, complementing the richness of the wood while maintaining period sensitivity.

Jorge Jabour stands out as an independent voice within Brazilian mid-century design. While less internationally recognized than some of his contemporaries, his work is increasingly sought after for its sculptural restraint, material integrity, and architectural clarity. As collectors deepen their knowledge of Brazilian Modernism beyond the canonical names, designers like Jabour continue to gain the recognition they deserve.
