Description

Designed in 1965 by Sergio Rodrigues (1924–2014) and produced by OCA, the Stella sofa stands as a mature expression of Brazilian modern design at its most confident and culturally grounded moment. By the mid-1960s, Rodrigues had firmly established a language that rejected imported European models in favor of furniture rooted in Brazilian materials, craft traditions, and modes of living.

The sofa’s sculptural base is executed in richly grained Brazilian rosewood, set on pointed, architectural legs that visually frame and support the upholstered volume. This dialogue between structure and softness is central to Rodrigues’ work, reflecting his belief that comfort, scale, and material honesty were fundamental to modern Brazilian interiors. The generously proportioned seat and back have been newly upholstered in a warm camel-toned bouclé, enhancing the sofa’s tactile presence while remaining faithful to the spirit of period upholstery.

The Stella model exemplifies Rodrigues’ synthesis of traditional woodworking techniques with a modern, expressive sensibility—simultaneously robust and refined. Produced during a period of intense cultural and architectural innovation in Brazil, the sofa embodies the ideals that positioned Rodrigues as the leading figure of Brazilian modern furniture.

A rare and significant work, the Stella sofa represents Brazilian modernism not as style, but as identity—an object conceived to anchor space, culture, and everyday life.
