Description

An expressive example of Brazilian modern furniture from the 1950s, this chaise lounge pairs a sculptural plywood frame with the enveloping comfort of ultra-soft off-white bouclé. Its elongated profile follows the reclining body: a gently rounded backrest descends into a deep seat, rises beneath the knees, and slopes toward the foot. This continuous contour gives the piece a sense of movement while offering generous support for extended relaxation.

The structure is particularly distinctive. Cut plywood side supports form an angular, open base, with long runners extending beneath the reclining backrest and transverse stretchers connecting the two sides. Visible metal fasteners articulate the assembly, making construction part of the design’s visual character. Above, triangular wooden arm supports frame open spaces beneath slender upholstered armrests. Their crisp geometry contrasts with the soft curves of the chaise, balancing structural clarity with an inviting silhouette.

The refinished wood reveals warm grain and natural tonal variation, while the exposed layered edges express the character of plywood. Newly upholstered in exceptionally soft off-white bouclé, the chaise has a richly textured surface that catches the light gently. Generous cushioning, a subtly buttoned upper backrest, and piping that traces the upholstered perimeter emphasize both comfort and the precision of its profile. The fully upholstered back gives the piece a finished presence when viewed from behind, making it well suited to placement away from a wall.

Its construction recalls the experimentation associated with José Zanine Caldas and Móveis Artísticos Z during the late 1940s and 1950s. Plywood offered Brazilian designers a means of creating expressive, repeatable forms with economical use of material, helping bring modern furniture within reach of an emerging urban middle class. Zanine’s work was central to this ambition, connecting industrial production with an informal, distinctly modern approach to domestic life. This chaise shares that period’s interest in cut plywood, open structures, and bodily comfort; its designer and manufacturer remain unidentified.

With its low stance, sweeping contours, and tactile upholstery, the chaise captures a compelling aspect of Brazilian modernism: furniture conceived around everyday ease, with enough sculptural character to define the space around it.
