Description
This Brazilian Modern planter combines an elongated fiber cement vessel with a slender steel rod base, balancing raw material character with an elegant sculptural silhouette. Made in Brazil circa the 1960s, with designer unknown, its sweeping, boatlike form reflects the organic vocabulary of mid-century design.
The shallow basin rises toward tapered ends, creating a fluid profile that changes distinctly with the viewing angle. Its weathered surface carries layered shades of charcoal, sand, and mineral gray, punctuated by ochre markings and intricate textural variation. These irregularities lend the vessel an earthy, almost archaeological presence.
The welded steel rod stand provides a precise architectural counterpoint. An elongated supporting ring cradles the removable basin, while slender legs and intersecting braces create an open framework beneath it. Reddish oxidation and remnants of a dark finish complement the cement’s nuanced surface. The carefully shaped vessel and economical construction of the base reveal the craftsmanship behind the composition.
Raw yet refined, the planter offers a compelling balance of texture, proportion, and negative space. Its long, shallow silhouette accommodates restrained planting while remaining expressive when empty—a distinctive sculptural accent within a collection of Brazilian Modern furniture.
