Description

Among the most celebrated icons of twentieth-century Brazilian design, the Paulistano Armchair embodies the architectural vision and radical material honesty that defined the work of Paulo Mendes da Rocha (1928–2021), one of Brazil’s most influential modernist architects and a recipient of the Pritzker Architecture Prize.

Originally conceived in 1957 for the Athletic Club of São Paulo, the Paulistano emerged during the formative years of São Paulo’s Brutalist movement. Mendes da Rocha approached furniture with the same rigor he applied to architecture, reducing form to its essential structural elements while prioritizing comfort, utility, and economy of means. The result is a chair of remarkable simplicity and enduring relevance—an object that remains as progressive today as it was more than six decades ago.

The design is composed of a single continuous stainless-steel rod bent into a self-supporting frame, supporting a suspended leather sling that naturally conforms to the body. Free from conventional upholstery, joinery, or ornamentation, the chair achieves exceptional comfort through tension, balance, and material integrity alone. Its sculptural silhouette appears almost weightless while maintaining extraordinary structural strength, exemplifying the modernist ideal of doing more with less.

Widely regarded as one of the most important furniture designs to emerge from Latin America, the Paulistano has become an enduring symbol of Brazilian Modernism and is included in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. Its influence extends beyond furniture design, standing as a landmark achievement at the intersection of architecture, industrial design, and contemporary living.

Offered here is a matching pair of Paulistano armchairs produced in Brazil by Objekto, the official manufacturer authorized to produce the design. Both examples retain their original Objekto maker’s marks, confirming authenticity and provenance. Executed entirely in polished stainless steel and retaining their original saddle-toned leather slings, the chairs display a rich natural patina developed through decades of use. The leather remains in good, honest vintage condition, exhibiting wear consistent with age while contributing to the character and authenticity sought by collectors of important modern design.

Elegant, architectural, and instantly recognizable, these early production examples from the 1970s–1980s represent one of the defining achievements of Brazilian modern furniture. Equally suited to residential and architectural interiors, the Paulistano remains a masterclass in structural innovation, visual lightness, and timeless design.
